Plus ça change, plus c’est la meme chose. . .
The more things change, the more they stay the same. And so it is with Mexico City’s Brasserie Lipp, a mirror image of its storied Parisian sister.
Since 1880, French novelists, philosophers, politicians and luminaries have cavorted at Brasserie Lipp. At the Mexico City restaurant – the only Brasserie Lipp outside Paris – everything from the elite clientele to the daily menu is en pareil.
"The who’s who of Mexico come here," says Jorge Berrio, general manager of the JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City. “It’s the place to see and be seen.” It’s also the place to enjoy oysters on the half shell as Hemingway did, or to indulge in steak tartare as Sartre might have. Chef Jacques-Olivier Borja, a veteran of Michelin three-star restaurants and a chef to former French president Jacques Chirac, anchors the menu with classics such as sole meunière, steak frites and garlicky escargot.
Smoked pork with lentils and the sauerkraut-laden choucroute honor the eatery’s Alsatian roots. Three sommeliers preside over the restaurant’s 5,000-bottle cellar, whose 577 labels include one of the city’s most extensive collections of Mexican wine.
And everything, from the Belle Époque décor to the daily specials, is the same as in Paris. If you are enjoying Monday’s boeuf bourguignon or Tuesday’s blanquette de veau, chances are that the French first lady may be too.
“This is traditional French cooking,” says Chef Borja. “And we have brought it to Mexico City with Brasserie Lipp.”
